The Two Sutras of the Medicine Buddha

The Two Sutras of the Medicine Buddha
Translated by Geshe Michael Roach with Dr. Eric Wu & Yan Tang.

In 2020, a pandemic swept across the world, claiming millions of lives. Members of our team, especially Dr. Eric Wu, had already been working with ancient manuscripts and practices of an Enlightened Being known as Medicine Buddha.

The teachings of this Buddha are particularly effective during global epidemics, and so we focused our efforts on translating the key instructions of this holy being. Using Sanskrit, Chinese, and Tibetan sources, we translated over a thousand pages of relevant material.

What you hold in your hands is the first and most significant outcome of our work: a translation of both the longer and shorter sutras of Medicine Buddha, composed around 25 centuries ago. Since most of our team is trained in reading great works in Tibetan, we started with the Tibetan translation of the sutra, which was made from the original Sanskrit about a thousand years ago.

Door to the Diamond Way: A Guide to Higher Happiness

By Tsongkapa (1357-1419) with an explanation by Pabongka Rinpoche (1871-1941).

Translated by Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Tharchin and Geshe Michael Roach

Regardless of where we live, what faith we follow, or what profession we pursue, the ancient wisdom of the Buddha offers a path to greater success and deeper happiness.

Door to the Diamond Way was written by Tsongkapa (1357-1419), the renowned teacher of the first Dalai Lama. In 1402, he ascended Lion Crag, a towering mountain above an ancient Tibetan monastery. There, he experienced a profound vision, finding himself among the greatest Buddhist masters of the past two thousand years, directly absorbing the essence of their wisdom.

Emerging from this vision, Tsongkapa composed The Source of All My Good, a song of gratitude to his teachers. These verses serve as a refined guide to achieving both inner and outer success. Traditionally, they prepare a disciple for the journey to make direct contact with enlightened beings—a path known as The Diamond Way.

This translation, completed by the esteemed Geshe Lobsang Tharchin and Geshe Michael Roach, brings this timeless wisdom to a modern audience.

Poems of the Diamond Way

This collection of exquisite poetry by Lobsang Chukyi Gyeltsen, the First Panchen Lama (1567–1662), is drawn from his biography as recorded in the classic work on the masters of the Lam Rim lineage, written by Yongdzin Yeshe Gyeltsen, tutor to the Eighth Dalai Lama.

Many of these poems were never included in the First Panchen Lama’s traditional collected works but were preserved instead through a secret tradition of chanting at the tantric college of his monastery, Tashi Lhunpo.

Written throughout his long life, beginning at the age of 14, these verses reflect his inner journey along the path to Enlightenment. They also offer insight into how he lived and practiced in the external world. In this way, his poetry serves as a timeless example for us to follow. This selection was carefully chosen to resonate with specific steps of the path that we ourselves are striving to master.

The Principal Teachings of Buddhism

Translated by Khen Rinpoche Geshe Lobsang Tharchin with Geshe Michael Roach.

This book distills the entire teachings of Buddhism into just a few short pages, explained by one of the greatest Buddhist masters of ancient Central Asia.

Buddhism began its spread in India more than two thousand years ago and reached its pinnacle in the hidden mountain kingdom of Tibet, five centuries before our time. The leader of this renaissance was Tsongkapa (1357-1419), whose influence inspired a movement that, at its height, saw nearly a million monks and nuns living in thousands of monasteries throughout Tibet.

Tsongkapa was the most renowned commentator in Buddhist history, having written approximately 10,000 pages of eloquent explanations of the ancient Buddhist texts. He took on the challenge of summarizing all this profound knowledge into a single poem. The result was his famous “Three Principal Paths,” a work of fourteen verses intended for a cherished student in a distant land.

This masterpiece by Tsongkapa is presented here with a commentary by the distinguished Pabongka Rinpoche (1878-1941), considered the foremost Tibetan Buddhist teacher of the last century. The text was translated by Geshe Lobsang Tharchin, one of the last masters from old Tibet. The cover features a statue of Tsongkapa known as “Looks Like Me,” named after Tsongkapa’s remark upon the unveiling of the statue. The original statue stood in the great Jokang Temple in Lhasa, Tibet, but was destroyed.

A Door to Emptiness: The Crucial Teaching for Touching the Diamond World

Translated by Geshe Michael Roach & Adam Andrade

For over two thousand years, the promise of these ancient texts has been that alongside the world we know, there exists an invisible higher world, always present around us. This realm can be referred to as the “Diamond World,” but a simpler—and often misunderstood—name for it is simply “Emptiness.”

The idea behind this is that if we can make contact with this higher world, if we can directly connect with it, this connection will trigger unstoppable and positive transformations in our being. This transformation begins in the very flesh of our bodies, creating a kind of wondrous change that spreads through our entire existence, turning it into a living diamond: a state of eternal beauty and wisdom. We might call this state paradise—a paradise accessible to every living being in the universe, where we all live in perfect harmony and happiness for all future time.

Stopping the Circle of Sadness: The Buddhist Teaching of the Wheel of Life

The ancient Buddhist teaching of the Wheel of Life is based on the 12 “links” or “triggers” that perpetuate this cycle.

The core idea is that simply being alive is like having already fallen into a pit of quicksand. If we understand the situation, we can calmly take the necessary steps to get help and escape. However, if we don’t understand how quicksand works, our efforts to escape only make things worse.

The purpose of this book is to provide some of the most intelligent and effective instructions ever written to help us navigate our lives successfully, including guidance for what happens after life. We all share the instinctive belief that if a life like this can happen to us once, then, given countless future years, it’s likely to happen again.

Over many years, the translators have studied many examples of classical Asian literature, particularly concerning strategies for navigating life’s quicksand. They have compiled a selection of some of the most effective and valuable writings from the last 25 centuries, offering strategies to escape suffering and attain true, lasting happiness.

A Song of My Spiritual Life : Crystal-clear answers to the questions we all have

The eBook Collection of Geshe Michael Roach - Download 'How Yoga Works' and More
Translated by Gibson Chang with Geshe Michael Roach.

We all know that life leads to a decline in health, unexpected illness, or a sudden accident—and eventually, it ends. We seldom talk about the inevitable because it is so hard to face.

The Song of My Spiritual Life offers a profound yet simple solution—and a way to share it with our loved ones and everyone around us.

Written nearly 600 years ago by the great Buddhist master from Tibet, Je Tsongkapa, this work provides deep insights. Tsongkapa was not only the most significant thinker in Buddhism’s 25 centuries but also one of its greatest meditators.

Je Tsongkapa wrote over 12,000 pages offering practical advice for overcoming the inevitability of death. However, there is one surprising fact about his life: he rarely wrote about himself.

This small book may be the only exception. In it, the Master shares the simple yet powerful method he used to overcome life’s inevitable tragedies and attain lasting happiness. The teachings are presented here in clear, beautiful language.

The translation has been carefully done in modern English by a team of skilled scholars from both Asia and the West, with an additional explanation written in Tibet three centuries ago.
