Xuanzang’s Tower is an international initiative led by Geshe Michael Roach, dedicated to translating and studying ancient Buddhist texts. The project continues within the framework of the Mixed Nuts Translation Project and is delivered online via https://tower.accelsite.io.
The name Xuanzang’s Tower is inspired by the legendary Chinese monk Xuanzang, who traveled for 17 years through more than 50 countries to gather sacred Buddhist texts. Upon returning to the Tang Dynasty capital of Chang’an (modern-day Xi’an), the emperor gave him a building known as the Wild Goose Pagoda, where he began a massive translation effort. According to Geshe Michael Roach, this historic event profoundly transformed Chinese culture. The modern project honors and continues that legacy.
📘 Purpose and Focus
The goal of Xuanzang’s Tower is to translate and transmit the deepest ideas of ancient Indian Buddhist philosophy by studying 12 essential books selected from more than 300,000 classical texts. These teachings:
- Are based on real-time translation from ancient languages,
- Focus on helping people experience direct insight into emptiness and the Diamond World,
- Include discussions on how to apply the teachings in daily life and business.
🧠 Class Structure
- 1 hour: Live translation and commentary,
- 15 minutes: Open discussion on practical application,
- 15 minutes: Announcements and global community updates.
Advanced students may also attend the DCC Elite class, offered immediately after the main session.
🗓️ Weekly Schedule
Starting in 2024, the project switched to a weekly rhythm instead of seasonal intensives:
- Monday evening (Arizona) / Tuesday morning (Asia): Main class, discussion, and Elite session
- Saturday morning (Arizona): Medium-level class for American and European audiences
All sessions are free of charge and open to everyone. As Geshe Michael says, he will continue teaching “every Monday as long as I can.”
👨🏫 The Translators
The project is carried out by a team of 12 long-term translators. Each undergoes more than 7 years of rigorous training. According to Geshe Michael, becoming a full translator takes about 15 years and requires:
- Exceptional intelligence,
- Language sensitivity and often musical ability,
- Long-term dedication and commitment.
📈 Outcomes
More than 1,200 sessions have already been held. According to participants, the teachings have had a significant impact on their mindset, careers, and personal development. Many experienced noticeable and positive life changes.
💬 The Mixed Nuts Approach
These classes are intentionally challenging. At first, many students don’t understand much — and that’s expected. As Geshe Michael says:
“If you can’t understand anything — you belong in the class.”
📍 Community and Location
In-person gatherings also take place in Sedona, Arizona. Meditation sessions are held on Mondays before class, and on Saturdays, participants meet informally at Peachtree Café after class.
Xuanzang’s Tower is not only a translation project — it is a living continuation of a legacy that began 1,400 years ago in China and continues today across the world.
