How Karma Works: a 59-Second Explanation by Geshe Michael Roach

  • Everything you see is filtered by your own past actions.
In any argument, “mental pictures” created by previous behavior rise up and colour the person in front of you.
  • Your words and deeds record themselves.
Each interaction leaves a karmic seed—a subconscious imprint of how you treated the other person.
  • Seeds ripen later into fresh experience.
A week, a year, or even decades on, that seed “opens,” projecting a new scene in which you hear and see your own past self.
  • Emotion matters.
The stronger your feelings and the worthier the person you’re dealing with, the deeper the imprint—and the bigger the future payoff (or backlash).

Take-away in one line:
Treat others the way you wish the world would treat you; you’re literally planting the future you’ll experience.
