A New Era Begins Geshe Michael Roach and the Five Houses of ACI

Welcome to a time of transformation. The Asian Classics Institute (ACI), founded by Geshe Michael Roach, is stepping into a bold new chapter: the creation of the Five Houses — a fresh framework designed to make the profound teachings of the Buddha more accessible, practical, and inspiring for a diverse, modern world.

What is ACI?

ACI is a global educational organization sharing authentic Buddhist teachings rooted in an unbroken lineage going back to Lord Buddha himself. Its foundation is a set of 18 rigorous courses created by Geshe Michael Roach, offering deep insight into Buddhist philosophy, karma, emptiness, meditation, and ethical living.

Why the Shift?

As explained by ACI’s Executive Director Timothy Lowenhaupt, while the 18 courses are an extraordinary foundation, they are also dense and highly academic. Many sincere students feel overwhelmed or believe they’re “not spiritual enough” to keep up. That’s simply not true — and that’s exactly why the Five Houses were born.

Introducing the Five Houses

  • Classics House — The academic core. For lovers of deep study, ancient texts, and classical Buddhist teachings. It’s the “spine” of the system.
  • Samadhi House — The meditation path. For those drawn to inner transformation through stillness and mindfulness.
  • Mountain House — The retreat experience. A path of silence, retreat, and direct experience.
  • Staircase House — The practical path. Applying Buddhist teachings in daily life: work, family, and relationships.
  • Diamond House — The advanced path. Accessible only by invitation after proper preparation in one of the other houses.

More Than Study — It’s About Service

At the heart of this transformation lies a powerful idea: true understanding comes from helping others. The Five Houses are not just study paths — they are platforms for service. Students will begin to build, design, and teach, turning wisdom into action.

Using Ancient Intelligence

This new initiative blends the ancient and the modern. As Tim Lowenhaupt shared, it’s about “Ancient Intelligence” — taking timeless teachings and translating them into today’s language using modern tools. The Buddha’s words, spoken 2,500 years ago, are still relevant — we just need new doors for people to enter.

This Is Just the Beginning

The transition to the Five Houses marks the beginning of something truly profound. Each participant steps into a new phase of their journey — one that will transform their lives and help them guide others.

Whether you are a scholar, a meditator, a teacher, or a beginner — there is a place for you. The door is open. All that remains is to choose — and walk through it.
